Apples of “Faith” Tart Tatin style Pie Recipe

This recipe is a regular in our home. It’s quick, looks and tastes amazing and because of it’s adaptable nature, it can be made gluten and sugar free very easily. I used to let the apples be open to see, and now the filo dough is such a lovely crusty part of this dish, I cover the apples with the filo and I think it’s even better.

It’s a great potluck dish to bring or a gift for holidays or a dinner party favorite. You can make this as an individual dessert for a loved one or a community dessert to share with a table of your favorite people.

 Ingredients:

  •  5 medium apples, cored, seeded and sliced(not too thin)

  • 2 cup brown sugar (or sugar free alternative)

  • 1/4 cup honey or agave

  • 1/3 cup water

  • 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon

  • Several sheets of filo dough

  • 2 cup butter, soft

 Method:

  •  Take a pan, place the water, 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup butter in the bottom.

  • Then place the apple slices, layered on each other, in the pan.

  • Add the agave or honey over them with sprinkles of the cinnamon. Cover and let cook for 15 minutes. Uncover and keep cooking another 10 minutes.

  • Turn off the heat and leave in pan.

  • Butter the dish/dishes you’re using.

  • Fill with layers of filo.

  • Add sprinkles of brown sugar, cinnamon, butter blobs.

  • Bake off the pastry bottom to golden. 350 for 20 mins.

  • Cool and fill with apple mixture.

  • Add more layers of filo

  • add the butter, cinnamon, brown sugar and agave on top

  • Bake again at 350 for 15 mins.

  • Cool a little and serve hot or cold.

I have laid out this recipe as I most frequently make it, however, there are many variations that can spring from this amazingly easy centerpiece for a good hearty meal.
