Assistance Newsletter
This title, like so many of our newsletters, has the possibilities of holding space for many meanings. In our society we often hear of elders moving into assisted living circumstances, especially when they can no longer take care of themselves. However, there are several occasions during a lifetime, when it’s prudent to request or offer assistance. We sometimes need help medically, to strengthen when the body has gone through a weakened state, or emotionally when we’ve had a loss or challenge we desire or desperately need help to come back from.
Financially or materially we have times when we have to call in help, when a life changes or a time of feeling like we cannot keep up with the demands from our current community or society at large. Advice, guidance, suggestions and inspiration are some of the best available aspects of our humanity, and we deserve to be willing to ask for help. It’s a part of us that endears others to us, because none of us are so perfect that we can’t use some assistance from one another at various times.
I remember a young woman who was sent to me for guidance, spent a lot of time defending the fact that she saw herself as a Lone Ranger, sailing in her boat of self control and immense strength. She felt like she was her own superhero and didn’t need anyone else. The trouble with that, even though it had its own value, was the question of what happened when she removed her cape of superhero help for others, how could others honor and prove to her that she too had a reliable source of assistance, that could be a space to turn to when she was able to relax and lean on her fellow loving human.
We aren’t actually islands and even islands aren’t ultimately islands, as the very water that supports an island also connects it to the mainland.
We were born to assist and be assisted in this life path by each other. We came here to use our senses, to feel our lives as they continue to unfold, and to connect to one another. Please ask for assistance when you need it, and assist others when possible. Let’s stay connected as we aren't islands, anymore than actual islands are.
