Humor Newsletter
Humor matters greatly. When we can laugh about life and not take ourselves too seriously, it’s always going to be a good thing. The best way to enlightenment is to lighten up.
I remember staying at the Satchidananda Ashram in Virginia, for a whole month as an LYT student (Living Yoga Training). I will admit that this has held the record for me as one of the most loving points of existence I have ever had the pleasure to live in. We did yoga every day, and I even managed to stand on my head during that time.
The vegetarian meals were prayed over, created and served with so much care and mindfulness that you could taste in every bite. Lightness and humor were there in the sparkle of the land, the dorm rooms and even our alarm call at 4am was provided by a violin playing Swami.
Many of the yoga leaders had grey hair and their levels of fitness was extraordinary. I loved every minute, in joy and in tears of heart touching love. One of the sacred ceremonies was a somber event until one of my dorm buddies let me know that the clay placed on my forehead was actually cow dung as a ritual in the temple. Once my forehead had been smeared with the dry white paste that instantly dried, I tried to smell my head and got nothing, but I observed myself sniffing at my head in a big, filled room with all my other dung headed beings, and I began to find the humor in it.
I tried to suppress my bubbling giggles, and couldn’t do it any longer, so I discreetly and respectfully left the temple, walking down to the bottom of the hill, so that I could let the giggles rip, thinking I wouldn’t be heard. People closest to the door heard sounds in a muffled way and thought I was weeping for whatever reason. I apologized to them as it wasnt’ tears and was instead giggles that needed the fresh air to open and be let out.
I loved the freedom of letting my laughter rip and to feel the unrestrained innocent joy bubble to the surface.
Laughter and joy are such a great part of who we essentially are and are worth allowing to surface.
When we laugh we massage all of our internal organs and to close our eyes and think of a joyful, funny moment in life that brings a smile and even evokes laughter is a very healthy way to connect to our inner self.
Laughter is contagious and something we can certainly do with more of.
