Patience - A Spiritual Story
I remember clearly sitting on a plane with a sweet slim man that I knew as a friend, a spiritual colleague and as someone very special with a kind heart. The return journey was good for a while, as we traveled from Northern California to Ohio, where we lived at that time.
A few of us had been given an opportunity to attend a spiritual workshop for a few days. A bunch of strangers were handed the chance to become friends in unusual circumstances. During our trip I felt tested with other people’s behavior, and I learned a great deal about patience during that trip.
Even the plane journey was a challenge, as the pilot informed us that bumpy air was going to be our experience until we landed.
One of our workshop participants went into major, out loud panic mode, letting everyone on the plane know that she felt “we were all going to die.”
It was a bit dramatic, and took all of my strength not to let her know she was being a bit ridiculous. Instead, I held the hand of my slim friend, and we breathed a smooth flight energy into the plane and its surrounding air. We sat and focused strongly until the plane became smooth, and we held that energy all the way to landing. Even the pilot commented that the air was surprisingly calm in the plane and not as bumpy as he’d imagined was going to be the case.
At the beginning of the workshop one of the other participants began a mad panic, saying she had lost her wallet or that someone had taken it when she had been in the store, picking up snacks to consume during the conference. I tapped her on the shoulder, asking her if she’d looked in her car. She brushed me away impatiently and I was asked by the guides to ask her again to look down the side of her car in the trunk, where it seemed that her wallet had fallen down.
She was really mad at me at that point, letting me know that someone had obviously taken it, and she’d already canceled all of her credit cards, which meant she had no money to pay for incidentals. We left the grocery store and checked into our hotel. When she lifted her case from the car, the wallet showed itself in all its glory. She looked at me and I nodded. At least she had the cash now, even if every single card was now canceled. Her impatience was a great mirror to show me how much better I could be with more patience.
