Laugh - A Spiritual Story
On my many extraordinary spiritual adventures, one of the kookiest was when I was living at the Ashram in West Virginia. There was a laughing yoga class. I tentatively walked in and decided to stay open minded to this thing. We began crawling all over the carpet, wagging our bums like tails, stopping to laugh out loud and then continue. I felt darned silly and every exercise pulled the embarrassment card for me.
The interesting thing was that grown men and women were doing it too. We were all in the room, deliberately laughing until we were laughing without thinking about it at all. It got sillier and funnier, and it made sense. Laughter massages all the organs from the inside out. It’s so good for us on every level of our being. I came back from that class feeling like I’d had a shower on the inside of my body, washing away any negative thoughts and feelings, with deep and open laughter. I actually loved it.
Another class that promoted laughter from a deep belly position, was my transformational breathwork class. They didn’t all make me laugh, but when they did it was extraordinary and freeing. Some of our emotions are held back in public, and anger and laughter with a certain degree of abandon seem to fit that place.
I remember standing with my mother at my grandmother’s funeral, which was a very sad event, as we really all loved her amazing rich and bright character. We all had a little cry and the only one with a hankie was my mum. We all passed this slightly disgusting cloth handkerchief around, until by the time it got to me, I got the giggles, and all of us were trying not to laugh hard and loud at my grandmother’s funeral. It caught each of us women off guard and we held back well, until the service was over, and then all three of us, my mum and my sister and I, fell about in fits of giggles.
None of us ever wanted to see that hankie ever again, and my mum literally threw it in the trash can, before we got in the car. I love when laughter lightens up a serious moment. Life is definitely better when we can laugh at the true silliness of it all.
