Acceptance - Spiritual Story
I remember being a very good salesperson when I was a teenager, growing up in the UK. I loved that work, because I always found a way to work smarter and not harder and to “bunk” off at every opportunity (otherwise known as playing hooky). My bosses loved me because I produced sales results and always beat whatever targets they set for me. I was in my groove and felt completely accepted.
On a couple of occasions, I had to step up my game, like one day I was sleeping in after a really good night out, and my boss rang me to see if he could meet with me and join me on my day. I was completely fast asleep and his call woke me. I gathered myself and rang back, letting him know I was doing paperwork and could we meet another day. That was a bullet dodged.
On another occasion I was at Wimbledon, enjoying a day of live tennis. I got to see all the greats, some like Boris Johnson who won Wimbledon a bunch of times, before he became so well known. My boss rang me and I had to call him back from a payphone (showing my age) and he could hear the noise behind me. I told him my client loved tennis and that the television was on quite loud.
It was a small lie that I told with fingers crossed behind my back, as I was mostly very honest. I made up for that little white lie by having one of the best months I’d ever had with maximum sales brought in.
The level of honesty sometimes got me into trouble when a different manager in a different sales job asked me how he was doing as my manager. He wasn’t effective and was terrible at staying in contact with me. Of course I told him, and he chose to not accept my response, which meant I found myself fired the very next day, for the one and only time in my working life. Within a 48 hour period in a busy and dynamic London, I was accepted for two new jobs that I could choose between. It was a great time to work and be in a great city where life was handed to a willing candidate on a plate of opportunity. To feel valued and accepted is a great experience to have in this life.
