Adoration - A spiritual Story

I remember a specific conversation, quite a long time ago, when I told my husband I wanted to be adored. He responded perfectly, that of course, he adored me. I’m not sure that his adoration at that time was enough for me. I wanted to be chosen and adored by others, and was often the silent messenger standing in the back of the room, with the message being acknowledged, and no space for any appreciation or especially adoration for the messenger herself.

This was definitely a bit of an ego projection at that time, and in some way the need to be adored, has an ego attachment to it. Perhaps being chosen and valued is a better form of adoration, and maybe even a more realistic version. However, adoration was an expression I was seeking at that time, and I know I’m not alone. Most singers, actors, performers of all sorts enjoy the applause, the recognition of a group of people, appreciating their performance.

One story I heard that touched my heart was shared at an intimate table, on a spiritual retreat. Two gay men who were both in a relationship with each other and practicing spiritually based psychologists, sat next to me at dinner that night. The conversation was enriching and considerately driven.

They were lovely together, and shared an experience they had a year ago. They took a break at a beautiful remote monastery that was tucked away in the Northern hills of California. It opened its doors only a few days a year, to specific individuals, by invitation only, to attend a few days of spiritual retreats.

The two men attended, and were given different meal times on their first night. The first man and then the second went down to the dining hall, where the doors were closed and they were greeted by one of the monks, who bowed and opened the double doors. As the doors opened the man was greeted by loud, loving applause and a line of smiling monks and other participants, on both sides of the dining hall.

As the man walked in the center of the line of applauding people, they each bowed with affirming reverence to the man. He wept as he walked and sat with the people, to eat with a full heart of adoring love that he had just received. His life partner then experienced the same journey of recognition and appreciation. Although such a simple gesture, it was powerful and memorable.
