Prayer or Meditation - A Spiritual Story

I chose to steward a sweet healing center, in Southern California, many years ago. It was in a small shopping center, right next door to a very popular sub style sandwich shop. It grew busy with our $1 a minute chair massage, while people waited for the their sandwiches to be made. Many of them only had 10 minutes or so, and when that time flew, they came back as full massage clients later.

One of the quickie clients while sat in our chair, grew very concerned about who we were, because she had been taught through religious conviction, that prayer was acceptable and meditation was not. It was never our job or the work at hand, to persuade anybody out of any held conviction. It was merely our work to hold a loving space and allow suggestions, ideas, doorways to appear, providing choice and where invited, education about broader viewpoints and possibilities in their lives ahead.

The one quickie chair massage client felt as though she had already gone against her long-standing principles by receiving a simple 10 minute massage from a body working business that held a wider view than hers. It was as though she had let in a burglar, who was trying to steal her convictions. She arose from the chair, pink in the face, threw the money into the hand of the therapist, and walked next door really quickly, to claim her lunch that made her feel whole again. This was a really harsh lesson for me, that I have never forgotten. I so desperately wanted to run after her, telling her we came from love and pure intention, and that we were so sorry if anything said or shared offended her. I did not have that opportunity, and had to sit with and in the seat of discomfort. It lasted several days, causing me to mistrust any sharing or even any work I did during that time. I was tentative and way more cautious.

Thank goodness realizations began to pour in, helping me to sort out that day. I found out that there is beauty in all things, including strong, religious messages that others carried for themselves.  From hereon in, I would stay diligent with anyone I worked with, making sure they could trust me, and that there was full permission, before I laid a hand on them. I wanted that safe space for them, and it was important for me that the work was enjoyable and valuable, in the time I was giving away. It fit the “do no harm” policy that massage therapists and professional holistic care practitioners provide.

I also asked the questions, and sat with the difference for me between prayer and meditation. I asked guides and Angelic messengers to clearly show me a manner of describing each for my own interest.

This is what they came up with……………

Prayer is when we reach out and ask for help, sometimes for others, other times for ourselves, and perhaps for our planet, or an amazing outcome and all the many reasons we pray. I loved this and felt that prayer is powerful with pure ideas to help someone else, and to call in help for ourselves when we really need it.

Meditation is where we sit and open our hearts and ears to listen. To listen attentively and take care to really pay attention and hear messages that will help us to serve our special time here on earth with more care and intent. I loved this one, and decided I wanted to become more practiced at this.

I love the help and understanding.  I hope this is of service to each of you.
