Adoration - A Spiritual Story

I am smiling as I prepare to share a couple of stories of life with my adorable dog “Woof.”

I had promised my young children a dog when we moved from a home we had in England for a while, to the edge of Central Coast California. We drove a little further North from our new home to the ranch house of a golden retriever dog breeder. There were a few puppies there and we all fell completely in love. I drove us home with squealing children holding the puppy in both hands.  Our ball of soft fluff “Woof” was so sweet, I could barely concentrate on the road.

He quickly settled in and within a few short months he was biting at our sprinkler system,  chasing birds and pawing at anything that moved. When the children were in school, he missed them so much that he ran across the road and it became a regular call from the school to ask us to come get him, because he was running around making friends with everyone, causing delightful chaos.

When I had clients at the house, he sat outside holding healing space with so much love, and if he found a sock on the floor, he enjoyed chewing on that while our session completed. I had to have a supply of new socks for clients to replace the wet ones with holes in them after he had finished with them.

One of my favorite “adorable” stories was when my husband and I drove to Northern California to explore options to live there, and we took “Woof” with us. Although the car was air conditioned, it was a really warm day, and he was so busy being sleepy that he didn’t drink enough water. We arrived at the real estate office, met by a realtor, in a gorgeous setting. We parked beside a scene of bridges and little waterways, with small trees and bushes. We opened the door to let Woof out. He ran to the water and jumped in, laying in the shallow water belly up and I swear he was smiling up at us, with the relaxed happy face of a dog that needed to cool down a whole bunch.

The realtor wasn’t amused, while we had to stop busting our sides laughing, and he looked so wonderful. It was so hot that day, we both wanted to join him.

When he got out, he stood beside her smartly outfitted suit and face of scorn, then shook all over her.

We apologized and left.
