Blossom - A Spiritual Story

Writing this spiritual story seemed like such an obvious choice to me, and I hope it resonates with you, my beloved reader. When I considered the word “Blossom” I thought of end of life work. It was a huge part of my early spiritual learning, working with hospice, Alzheimer’s, Dementia and elder care Health centers. When you sit with elders, regardless of what’s missing from their healthy lives, they naturally bring other elements to the table of wisdom. Those elements are often in such a phase of big bloom, it is outstanding to observe, when you’re on the receiving end, open and willing to truly, deeply listen. I have had such gifted experiences in this full blossom arena.

One of the sweet ones was when I began in the healing field of work. My mum was volunteering as a baker at a day center, baking up a storm, and making extra cakes for the other two centers involved in the small chain of care. They really appreciated what she did, and then she told the organizers of those care centers, about me. She sang my praises and it was agreed that I would go one day to illustrate my offerings to the general manager, who was a 7 feet tall dry humored stoic British man.

I went with heart in hand first, to the day care center that was the busiest, most popular part of their 3 units of care. One was a residential, one was a day center and another housed those who had Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The general manager met me at the day care center, with a highly developed skeptical view of anything holistic. He was all about the pharmaceuticals and keeping individual’s pain and challenges at bay. He made fun of me, and was just funny enough for me to like him anyway.

I stepped into a social room, where the audience were sat, after lunch, resting and visiting with each other. Some were quite deaf, some were quite sleepy and others were alert and happy to meet me. I began speaking of healing, sharing a hand rub on everyone present, with essential oil softening creams. I chatted to them all, while some slept, even snored, and others leaned toward their neighbors to ask what I’d said on their deaf side. It would have been quite a challenge, except they were all in their own way, so happy I was there. They appreciated the hand rub, the chat, the ideas I shared. I had them all breathing nice and deep, making an “Om” sound and breathing out with intention. This was one of the sweetest, most receptive audience I could have imagined.

The level of gratitude was strong. They each valued the time I was taking to spend with them. Nothing was taken for granted. I got applauded, even cheered, and on that first day, every single one of the people signed up for hand and head and foot massages. This became one of my first and best gigs in the early days of healing.

While I would rub their tired joints in hands, heads and feet, they would share stories, tell tales of wisdom, express how they viewed the World. I learned so much. I loved that time with those elders in almost full blossom in their lives.
