I love stories of grace and gentle acts of humanity at its best. It doesn’t always work that way, but it’s lovely when it does. I have realized that I cannot force grace on anyone else, and can only ensure I check my own as often as possible.

While running my healing center, filled with some extraordinarily talented therapists and amazing souls who found us under the title of clients, an interesting story occurred.

One of these had a story that unfolded spiritually that taught me a great deal about true grace.

Our healing center had undertaken a special quickie promotion. We worked with a company who created a beautiful glossy brochure, offering three 30 -minute each spa style sessions to the general public and the company were paid for these, while we were tipped or paid if someone upgraded to an hour, or continued booking after the promotion ended. The three visits included massage, reflexology and a skinny wrap to cleanse and detoxify. It was a lovely promotion shared by me and two of my therapists who were completely behind it.

One day a local yoga instructor found us, and floated in waving her gifted brochure at my mum excitedly, ready to book all of her sessions within a two-week period. She came in and had a delightful massage with one of my therapists. Then I was the one to provide her with the reflexology session.  After her aromatherapy soak, padded dry and covered with my own creation of foot cream, it was time to provide the insightful foot massage.

I closed my eyes and held her feet in my lap and told her I often received messages of grace. With eyes closed, she nodded her agreement to hear what came through.

I saw her needing to go to Texas and say her goodbyes to her father, who was leaving our World soon, very soon. It felt urgent.

There weren’t tears and she left the healing center very thoughtful.

A week passed before her very last appointment for the wrap.

She came in to talk to me.

Only my mum and I were there.

She told me that she had listened to my words.

She wanted to act on the grace that was given to her, although she hadn’t spoken to her father for almost 18 years. She was scared to open that door. Her father had chosen addiction over family and she had closed the doors of her heart to him a long time ago.

In spite of this, after our session, she had traced his most current circumstances and found he was in hospice. He lived in Texas and she chose to hop on a plane and go say goodbye.

He had been gracious and loving in his last hours. He apologized and let her know he was very proud of the woman she had become. She wept and so did he. They had closure and she was really thankful.

She held my hands in hers and then asked me if she could swap her wrap for a second massage. I let her know she could not.  I explained that we weren’t paid for the promotions and that the three of us therapists shared the sessions so that not one of us were burdened.

She was mad at me, ripped up the brochure in front of me and stormed out. That precious moment of grace was gone. It didn’t last and I was a little stunned.

However, upon reflection with my mum, we both decided that a really sweet thing had occurred anyway, and the finality of how we said goodbye was less important for us, than the more gracious one she had experienced with her father.

We were still doing the right and best work, regardless of how quickly it could be forgotten, when a demand wasn’t met in the way it was wanted by the client.

We still stood in Grace.
